Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA) resorts are preparing for a full summer of biking, hiking, grilling, golfing and of course, a healthy dose of Colorado sunshine. Memorial Day weekend typically marks the beginning of the summer season, and Colorado’s mountain communities are ready with a bevy of activities for guests to experience.
Ready for summer in the mountains? Granby Ranch is kicking off the season with new amenity names and events as they prepare for the hot and active months ahead. Golfing, biking, grilling, volleyball and more can all be found at the Ranch.
Congrats to Telluride’s Matt Skinner on winning a 2012 Sammy
Sammys are awarded by Ski Area Management (SAM) magazine to individuals in the ski industry who stand out and show exceptional leadership qualities, not only at their resort but in the industry as well. The Sammy Leadership Award winners are nominated by their peers, can come from any resort in the country, and cover all aspects of resort operations.
Matt is the vice president of sales and marketing at Telluride Ski & Golf. He has worked in the ski industry with various companies including a ski shop at Bogus Basin Idaho, Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort, and Bonier Mountain Group (publishers of Ski and Skiing magazines).
Under Skinner’s leadership, Telluride was also recognized by SAM for Best Ad Market Research. In the fall, using social media, the resort put different ad creatives up for feedback, basically asking people who already like the resort, literally, not just digitally, to vote on and choose their favorite. Are you following the Ring of Fire tour that Aspen/Snowmass’ Chris Davenport and his ski mountaineering team are undertaking? You know Chris Davenport…the big mountain skier from Snowmass and father of three who in 2006-07 climbed and skied all 54 of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks, in a single year?
Well this month, when most skiers and riders have turned in their snow gear for any number of warm-weather two-footed means of propulsion, Davenport traded in his gear for this.
Adoringly referred to as the Spyder Land Yacht, Davenport and his team are in it cruising the Pacific Northwest currently on the Ring of Fire tour, the next chapter in his adventure chronicles. The Ring of Fire tour mission is to ski 14 volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest.
The odds are in his favor for several reasons, one, he’s done a similar adventure before, to some degree. Two, snow conditions in that part of the county are better than the rest of the ski states right now, and three, the terrain, while challenging, is technically different than the 14ers.
The team started on May 4 and if all goes according to schedule, they’ll wrap up on May 21. To date, with the help of sponsors Whole Foods, Spyder, and Smith, they’ve accomplished Lassen Peak, CA, Mt. Shasta, CA, Mt. McLoughlin, OR, Mt. Thielson, OR, Mt. Bachelor, OR, Three Sisters, OR, Mt. Washington, OR, Mt. Jefferson, OR, and Mt. Hood, OR.
