Durango Mountain Resort hosts the second annual First National Bank of Durango Muck and Mire on the Mountain on Aug. 10, 2013, featuring new and improved obstacles. Race participants will get down and dirty as they test their endurance on more than a dozen different obstacles stationed around the mountain in the 10k, 5k and 1 mile Mini Muck and Mire for kids.
The 10k race is designed for more serious competitors who want to conquer challenges such as a mud pit, high hurdles, tires, slip-n-slide, cargo nets, culvert crawl, balance beam and wall climbs. From start to finish, adrenaline junkies will need to endure 17 exhilarating obstacles, including five new features such as high hurdles, stacked logs, an icy pool and more.
The 5k Muck & Mire event is designed for families and recreational contenders. During this event, participants will traverse log jams and hay bales, scale rock gardens and walls, and negotiate mud pits.
Kids can participate in the Backcountry Experience Mini Muck and Mire one mile fun run, following the 5K and 10K events. The Mini Muck & Mire includes some obstacles including a mud pit, hay bales and culvert crawl.
A post-event celebration, complete with a DJ, beer garden and soda party sponsored by Steamworks Brewing Co. and Durango Coca-Cola, features awards and prizes for a variety of categories, including best costume and fastest time for 10k categories. This year’s beneficiary is 9-R Schools. Participants are encouraged to bring school supplies on race day that will be donated to the 9-R School District.
Special lodging packages are available to participants starting at $32 per person for one night, slopeside lodging for four people (valid Aug. 8-11, 2013 only). Reservations may be booked by calling 800-525-0892 and mentioning “Muck and Mire.”
