Amtrak to Glenwood Springs drops skiers at Sunlight’s Doorstep
Did you know there’s more than one ski train in Colorado? Amtrak’s California Zephyr is exactly that, dropping skiers and riders off daily in Glenwood Springs, the home of Sunlight Mountain Resort, where walkup adult lift tickets are just $63.
Not only do you get to bypass I-70, you don’t need a car once you arrive in town. Everything from restaurants to lodging to hot springs is within walking distance of the Glenwood Springs Train Depot. When you’re ready to hit the slopes, Sunlight’s shuttle service will transport you to and from the mountain from several Glenwood Springs accommodations.
Amtrak’s California Zephyr leaves Denver’s Union Station daily at 8:05 a.m. and arrives in Glenwood Springs a little before 2 p.m. Tickets start at $44. Even though it takes longer than driving, it’s a memory-making start to a hassle-free winter getaway. While aboard, take a seat in the Zephyr’s Observation Car. The floor-to-ceiling windows are perfect for viewing some of the state’s most spectacular landscapes, including the rugged cliffs of Glenwood Canyon. So grab a drink from the bar car, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.
When you’re ready to head to the slopes, the Sunlight Shuttle will pick you up at your hotel before the lifts open and drop you back off after they close at the end of the day. The Shuttle, normally $5, is free if you’ve booked a Ski Swim Stay package. Sunlight’s signature Ski, Swim, and Stay package included a nice soak at Glenwood Hot Springs Pool and kids 12 and under ski free! Packages start at $99 a night.
