What better way to celebrate Colorado’s own Denver Broncos playing in Super Bowl XLVIII than to head to the Rocky Mountains, ski all weekend and watch the big game? Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) is selling $48 lift tickets for Saturday, February 1, 2014 to anyone who wears orange on their outside layer, encouraging guests to come to the mountain and be “united in orange” together on the slopes. In addition, there will be a tailgate party, large TV screens to watch the game in a base area bar, a wing eating contest, giveaways and discounted tickets on Monday too, with the price depending on the score of Sunday’s game. Aspen/Snowmass will hold a community celebration to honor four local athletes headed to the Olympics. The ceremony will be held today at 4 p.m. in Gondola Plaza at the base of Aspen Mountain.
The ceremony will kick off at 4 p.m. with a proclamation by the mayor of Aspen, Steve Skadron followed by the CEO of Aspen Skiing Company, Mike Kaplan. The Olympians will be introduced and presented with a special gift. The ceremony will be followed by a party with food and drink specials at Chair 9 in The Little Nell.
“This community is committed to promoting and celebrating athletic excellence, and being represented by these inspiring individuals is truly an honor for all of us,” says Mike Kaplan, Aspen Skiing Company CEO. “All of us in the Roaring Fork Valley owe it to them to come out on Wednesday and give them our support. ”
The four Olympians are:
Torin Yater-Wallace – U.S. Freeskiing Team
Jeremy Abbott – U.S. Figure Skating Team
Simi Hamilton – U.S. Cross Country Ski Team
Noah Hoffman – U.S. Cross Country Ski Team

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia are right around the corner, and a town in northwest Colorado that serves as an assembly line for snowsports champions organized a going-away party on Saturday to send its hometown Olympic heroes off in style.
The festivities began with a skills demonstration from participants in the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, which over the years has produced 79 Olympians. Afterwards, this year’s crop of competitors were honored onstage along with local wounded warriors and guests were treated to a torch relay, the lighting of a 15-foot cauldron that will remain lit throughout the Games, fireworks, a flash mob dance, and birthday cake. Head to Powderhorn for a night of skiing/riding under the stars and lights at Powderhorn on Friday, February 28 and Sunday, March 1. The Take-Four lift will be open to Midway with Lower Peacemaker run along with the Easy-Ride lift and Bottom’s Up run under the lights. This is the first time Powderhorn has done night skiing and we will have more days throughout the season. The discounted rates will be available starting at 2pm, with lift access open from 4-8pm. All day ticket purchasers, Season Pass Holders and P-Card user tickets will be valid until 8pm. There will not be a discounted rate for P-Card holders for night skiing. Please purchase tickets at the Ticket Office.

ESPN and Aspen Skiing Company have reached a milestone agreement in principle that will keep the X Games in Aspen/Snowmass, Colo. through 2019. After a comprehensive bidding process, ESPN chose to continue its long-term relationship with Aspen Skiing Company, already the longest-tenured X Games host city. Now in its 13th year hosting the premiere winter action sports event, by the end of the extension Aspen will have been home to the event for nearly two decades.
“For the last 13 years, Aspen/Snowmass has been a fantastic location for the Winter X Games and we’re excited about extending our stay in Aspen/Snowmass and continuing our great relationship with Aspen Skiing Company,” said Scott Guglielmino, senior vice president, programming and X Games. “While the level of interest from other locations was excellent, the opportunity to continue our collaboration with Aspen Skiing Company proved the most promising for long-term growth and development of the event.” (continue reading…)
