The 40^th anniversary of Earth Day is coming up later this month. In Ski Country, we feel that every day is Earth Day as resorts are constantly exploring new ways to support our sports’ most valuable asset. Going Out in Style Closing weekends, while sad in some ways, are really excuses to dress up in outrageous outfits, slide down snow on things other than skis and boards, and party like a rock star. Sure we have to say goodbye to another ski season, and say goodbye to friends and co-workers who leave town for the summer, but thanks to end-of-season festivities the images we have of friends on the last day of the season will last us ’till opening day.

The Burger Index

The smell of spring skiing means burgers grilling on the deck of the lodge, mmmm. One way to sum up this season is as the season of value. There was a lot of talk this fall about what sort of value is out there and the hamburger has been served up as a USDA prime example.

At the end of his presidency in 2001, President Bill Clinton issued a nationwide Roadless Rule that covered 58 million acres and limited road building and tree removal in those areas. That rule was overturned by President George W. Bush who then invited individual states to submit their own Rules.

In 2005, Colorado created a stakeholder taskforce and started the process to develop a Rule specific to our state. Colorado Ski Country USA is proud to have been a part of the Colorado Roadless Task Force which established the framework for today’s Colorado Roadless Rule. (Photo by Dan Sweeney)

In hopes of raising some Olympic caliber skiers, and getting in some Ski Team worthy turns ourselves, we headed to Steamboat-Ski Town USA®. Steamboat has churned out more Olympic athletes than any other town in North America. It has a rich heritage with the US Ski Team as athletes are drawn to Steamboat by the legendary terrain and, as we found out, some still hang around town.

Spring Loaded Calendars With an annual snowfall average in the neighborhood of 300 inches, high elevations and dry air, Colorado is able to offer one of the longest ski seasons in the United States.
