Moonlight Dinner Series at Arapahoe Basin

by Mountain Correspondent on Dec.18, 2011, under Colorado Events, Colorado Skiing, General

It’s dark, cold, and the chairlifts aren’t running. Let’s go skiing.

I’m at Arapahoe Basin on a chilly December evening, putting on my boots in the parking lot by headlamp. Somewhere up on the dark monolith before me lies the Black Mountain Lodge, and in it, a decadent feast. So while I wonder what’s wrong with this group of people gathering around me, I’m motivated to beat them to the grub.

We’re here at the Moonlight Dinner Series’ Swiss Night, a creation of renowned Chef Rybak. The full moon we’ve been promised has not shown its face yet, but if it’s anything like me it’ll come running once it hears the dinner bell. Sufficiently layered and lit with headlamps, we begin our trek.

Big snowfall brings the US Ski Team to Wolf Creek

Big snowfall brings the US Ski Team to Wolf Creek

Wolf Creek is usually near the top of the list for snowfall in Colorado, but that doesn’t mean “Wolfie” is only for powderhounds. Those that like to bang bumps flock to Wolf Creek too – namely the US Freestyle Ski Team.  According to Scott Rawles, the team’s head mogul coach, Wolf Creek is “The place to be, pretty much in the whole world right now”. With the most fresh snow in the country waiting for them, the whole US Freestyle Ski Team headed for this southwest Colorado mecca.

by Jennifer on Jan.25, 2010, under Colorado Events, General

DIA’s got the red-eyed, blue mustang. The Convention Center has the big, blue grizzly. The World’s Largest Apres Ski and Ride Party has this; a giant, blue, fuzzy, ermine-looking thing. But the apres ermine can dance. And he can hand out information about the World’s Largest Apres Ski and Ride Party, which is exactly what he was doing in downtown Denver recently.

Open to both SIA Snow Show attendees and Denver locals, the World’s Largest Apres Ski and Ride Party is this week, January 28-30, 2010.

2010 Goals Post

by Jennifer on Jan.14, 2010, under Colorado Events, General

I know we’re already deep into the first month of 2010, but I’ve been thinking a lot about my resolutions for the year, starting with being more prompt with deadlines. But a year is a long time and I work better under pressure, so I’ve shortened the time frame from a year to just the end of the ski season. I also don’t like the idea of resolutions, so I’ve changed them into goals. And because during the winter most of what I do has to do with skiing, I made it even easier on myself and kept my goals to skiing and riding. (photo: Telluride_Casey Day) Following is the short list, the long one I’m still compiling, but without a deadline it may never be finished. Telluride_CaseyDay (continue reading…)

Colorado’s Gold Rush

Colorado’s Gold Rush

If you ever have a chance to go to the Olympics – do it, especially if you’re an athlete on the US Team, but also if you’re a spectator or a volunteer. I had the opportunity to go to the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake and it was an amazing experience.

Sometimes people think the CSCUSA Gold Pass is a medal, and usually I let them think that. IMG00033-20091027-0928The things I remember most about the Olympics are; the huge, nearly empty plane from JFK to SLC (remember this was just after 911), (continue reading…)
