Snowmass: Inspiring Olympic Aspirations in Families

The town of Aspen has a couple of things working against it: exorbitant prices and a reputation for misbehaving celebrities such as Charlie Sheen and those on VH1’s controversial Secrets of Aspen. Fortunately, it has even more going for it.
My family visited Snowmass for the first time last weekend. I was eager to try the largest of Aspen Ski Company’s highly acclaimed four resorts but I was also worried I wouldn’t fit in. I don’t own fur and my nails haven’t seen a manicure since those fake nails I wore to my high school graduation. Turns out, it didn’t matter. I was, after all, at a world-class ski resort. I just wore gloves the entire time.

Pond Skimming Season

Even though it’s still a few weeks away, spring is in the air this weekend in Ski Country. It’s always funny to me to see what crazy events happen at resorts when the days get longer and the snow gets softer. If pond skimming was an Olympic sport I think Coloradans would rule the podium.
The events listed below are just a sampling of what the resorts’ calendars have on the agenda for spring. If you head up just be sure to bring sun screen, a bathing suit and a pig costume.

From Denver, a day trip to SolVista is SoEasy. And when you hit it on a powder day like we did, it is SnowNice. Just a short drive down the valley from its neighbors Winter Park and Mary Jane, SolVista is a happy little place for kids and families, kind of like a winterized Romper Room.
A Platinum Gem

Monarch is celebrating its 70th anniversary this season and we arrived on a sunny morning after several days of fresh snowfall. While this was my third visit to Monarch, I had never actually skied the lift served terrain but had only skied the backcountry terrain accessed by Monarch Snowcat Tours. So with the kids in tow we set off to explore the all natural snow on the lift served runs that have been enjoyed by many skiers and riders for more than 70 years.

The Extremes, The Double Greens, The Butte
by Jennifer on Feb.17, 2010, under General
With weather forecasters calling for snow in the mountains and a three day weekend ahead that included Valentine’s Day, we packed up the family truckster and headed to Crested Butte. Plus, I needed to check out the new stuff at Crested Butte like the totally renovated Ice Bar and new Kids Adventure Center.
